Dr. McInnis is president and founder of Blue Thorn Inc., a healthcare and policy consulting firm.  As a physician executive, her 30 years of experience covers the gamut from clinical practice and leadership positions in both military and civilian hospital/private group practice settings to multi-national Corporate Medical Director roles with responsibility ranging from management of employer health benefits to developing, influencing, and promoting national and state healthcare policy redesign.

Blue Thorn Inc. with Dr. McInnis’s leadership and network of “best in class” resources and partners focuses on enabling clients to not only understand the economic, policy, and delivery system changes necessary to remain viable; but to successfully create a sustainable healthcare payment and delivery system proactively.

Recently as Chief Transformation Officer for Cornerstone Health Enablement Strategic Solutions (CHESS), Dr. McInnis gained first-hand knowledge of the challenges and roadmap needed for providers to successfully transition from fee-for-service to value.  This included in depth knowledge of the capital, payer contract “value” details, coding and documentation efforts, analytics, physician compensation realignment challenges, and clinical transformation strategies employed within numerous ACO/CIO provider/integrated delivery system entities.  While there she consulted with physician and professional organizations, developed staffing models, physician compensation guidelines, and client gap assessment strategies to determine “next steps” in maximizing resources for the greatest financial and clinical impact.

She continues to work extensively with ACO leaders and as an innovation grant subject matter expert, uniquely aware that success resides in not only sharing best practices, but knowing what isn’t working and rapidly adjusting.

Dr. McInnis serves as a recognized expert on the evolving role of clinical pharmacists as core PCMH/ACO team members in integrating comprehensive medication management services which demonstrates not only favorable impacts on quality metrics, but can provide critical access for patients and address the national provider workforce shortage with overall healthcare cost reductions. She is the current Board Chair of the Alliance for Medication Management (AIMM) and a director on the Board of Pharmacy Specialities. Extensive work with professional pharmacist organizations, colleges of pharmacy, physician and other provider organizations, patient advocacy groups, and public/private payers, continues on the delineation of practice, documentation, ROI, and payment models for this new service.

From 2007-2012, Dr. McInnis Co-Chaired the Center for Public Payer Implementation and positioned and co-led the Medication Management Taskforce of the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative (PCPCC).  As a benefit design expert, she was a core participant and content developer for sections of the PCPCC “Purchaser’s Guide” and led the efforts in the development, content, and acceptance of the PCPCC  “Integrating Comprehensive Medications to Optimize Patient Outcomes” Guide, while facilitating AHRQ’s inclusion of the Guide in the Innovation Exchange Quality Toolkit.  Dr. McInnis also served on numerous NBGH committees and the US Chamber Benefits Committee.

Consulting clients include major integrated delivery systems, health plans, professional physician organizations, professional pharmacist organizations, pharmaceutical companies, leading IT solution companies, and universities/academia.  She also partners on projects with other nationally renowned consulting firms such as SSB Solutions and the Altarum Institute.
